Kinja'd!!!

I realize maybe all of 5 people here even know what that is. The 24th of July celebrates the settlement of the Salt Lake valley by the Mormon Pioneers. The 24th of July being the day they entered the valley for the first time in 1847.

Kinja'd!!!

My family has a deep connection to this holiday and Utah history. My 3rd great grandparents were among the first pioneers to enter the valley. They were later called to California to settle San Bernardino (if you like your street grid system Bernardinos, you’re welc ome)   and then finally back home to Utah to settle the Bear Lake area.

Kinja'd!!!

On the other side of my family the Brownings were doing things in Ogden Utah that would eventually change the world through firearms.

Kinja'd!!!

I realize that no people have an untarnished history in terms of early western settlement and the Pioneers certainly had their black eyes and missteps but no one can dispute the contribution of these pioneers to the growth and prosperity of western states and Utah Truly has grown into a helluvu place to live and work.

I’ve always been a little jealous of my wife and her family having a distinct heritage (her mom emigrated from Norway) with distinct traditions and histories to celebrate but the 24th reminds me that I have plenty to be proud of as well.

That’s all. Just proud to be a part of Utah heritage.

I’m not being insulting either...I really did find this neat.

So when are you providing all Oppo members a free Browning gun ?

I have a Browning shotgun and consider JMB to have been one of the exemplary mechanical designers of all time.

My family comes from his brother Matthews ’s line, but Matthew and John were linked at the hip in terms of their shop, Matthew having a number of patents to his name as well but mostly focused on business growth and management .  You aren’t wrong though, the browning boys were uncommonly clever boys.

I had never heard of Pioneer Day, but now I know! I think thats really cool and definitely something to be proud of. Sometimes I think we could use a bit more of that pioneer spirit these days, but it makes me glad to see some people still recognize it.

I would also like to get in line with Master Mario for that free Browning. Do we get to request what we want? If so, I’d like   a Citori 725 Sporting Golden Clays with 32" barrles, please. It will have a good home with my Buckmark, Hi-Power, and Auto-5. Thanks!

Awesome, I love seeing peoples history and stories..

My families were a total hodgpodge of things; one Grandpa had French-C anadian, Metis, English- married to a Swedish bride.. Other Grandpa was Scottish, married to Pennsylvania Dutch Wife... All over the map..

It’s nice to see people talking about their heritage. I’m proud of my ties to famous people and events. I find that more important than my pedigree (certified mutt here).

I did a project in San Bernardino and we had to cross the “Mormon” storm drain. This drain was constructed in the late 1800's and is still functional. It has a flat floor and a brick arch roof.

It was almost 100 degrees down here by the time the parade was over (20 minutes lol). Sometimes I resent the pioneers that were sent down here to settle the land. It’s too blasted hot for soft bodies to survive, let alone anything you plant in the ground. But in the  end, it’s a great place to raise a family. In the shade, under a tree.

Do it before your elders pass. I’ve lost my parents and grandparents, so ties to much of the history is gone. We were fortunate that my mom collected much of the lineage, so I have that. I keep threatening to write down all the stories that I remember so they can get passed down. One of these days, I’ll get it done.

I took the day off not even realizing it was a state holiday, I always forget about this one. I have no Utah connection so I’ve never exactly cared for this holiday.  My one employee couldn’t come in because they were trapped at their house between the parade and marathon unable to leave. At least it was going to be a super slow day at work anyway. Got a nice bike ride in at high star and might go ride the crest later if my legs are feeling up to it still.

True. Go inside, t ake off my shoes, and stand in front of a little fan and I can cool down in a few minutes after being soaked with sweat from the heat.  The dry heat has its advantages.

After I moved to Utah the first time, my mom told me some of my dad’s ancestors were part of the original settlers to Salt Lake City. I’m sitting there going “Wait? What? I thought they were all Episcopalian?”
